Idiot Child was created in 2009 by Anna Harpin (writer/director), Susie Riddell (actor/producer) and Jimmy Whiteaker (writer/actor). The three had worked successfully together on Jimmy's play, Nostalgia for Theatre West at the Alma Tavern. Keen to develop our working relationship as well as being firm friends, they set up Idiot Child and the company's first performance was Choking Hazard for Bristol Old Vic's Ferment.
Idiot Child is a theatre company making playful and peculiar work in the South West and beyond. Drawing on autobiography and memory, the company devise bleak, comic tales that emerge from the facts, objects, and oddities of their own lives. The company make work that is concerned with comedy, pain, and theatricality and always place the audience at its heart.
The company has recently been joined by Luke Emery (producer). Good day to you, Luke!
Luke is an independent producer with a background in theatre, music and visual arts.
He is Associate Producer at Theatre Bristol and Creative Common. As well as working with Idiot Child, Luke also works with curious directive and Tristan Bernays. In the past he has worked with Bristol Ferment, the Norfolk and Norwich Festival, Artichoke, Norwich Playhouse and Odd Comic. He produced and curated BETA, the first platform for regional artists at the Norfolk and Norwich Festival.
He has lectured at Norwich University of the Arts on Producing and Project Management.
Jimmy is a writer and actor.
His recent writing credits include You’re Not Doing It Right and I Could’ve Been Better (both Idiot Child), Nostalgia (Alma Theatre) and Choking Hazard (Bristol Old Vic). Recent acting credits include I, Caliban (Bristol Old Vic), I Could’'ve Been Better (Idiot Child/ Bristol Old Vic Ferment) Knife Act (Hearth Theatre Company) and Dr Faustus (Splendid Productions).
His play Nostalgia was shortlisted for the 2010 Meyer-Whitworth Award.
Anna is a playwright, director, and academic.
She completed a PhD at the University of Cambridge in 2009 on contemporary theatre practice and currently works as a lecturer in drama at the University of Exeter. Her research explores theatre and performance, ethics, trauma, health, and stand up comedy. She combines academia with theatre practice.
She is also a trustee and the secretary of the mental health service-user company Stepping Out Theatre. Recent writing credits include I Could’'ve Been Better (Idiot Child) and Isle of Shame as part of Eddie King’s Unforgettable Tour of the Forgotten (Tobacco Factory). Recent directing credits include Choking Hazard (Idiot Child, Ferment), Nostalgia (Theatre West), The Wonderful World of Dissocia (Corpus Playroom), You're Not Doing It Right (Idiot Child)
Susie is an actor and producer.
She trained at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.
For Idiot Child, Susie has performed in You're Not Doing It Right and in Choking Hazard. Other theatre includes Nostalgia by Jimmy Whiteaker and Rabbit Ears (both Theatre West), Beauty & the Beast (Creation Theatre) and The Taming of the Shrew and Twelfth Night (Oddsocks Productions). Television includes Saxondale, Gavin and Stacey, Emmerdale and Doctors.
Susie plays Tracy Horrobin in The Archers and has been a member of the BBC Radio Drama Company.
